The Double Decker Bus Calculator

double decker bus calculatorEver read in a newspaper that something is "the length of twenty double-decker buses", or that a country is "twice the size of Wales", and wondered exactly how big that is? Further, have you ever wondered how many football pitches there are to a Manhattan Island, or how many Nelson Columns it would take to get to the Moon and back?

The Double Decker Bus Calculator (DDBC) sets out to solve these problems. By using the calculator, you are able to convert between standard and strange units of measurement. Want to know how long ten blue whales are in fathoms? No problem! How large are American football fields in comparison to rest-of-the-world soccer pitches? Of course you don't, but you're going to find out anyway...

The calculator itself is split into four different sections:

Lengths - double decker bus, football pitch (soccer), football field (American), cricket pitch, Land's End to John O'Groats, Earth to the Moon, blue whale, equator

Areas - Wales, Manhattan, football pitch (soccer), football field (American), Isle Of Man, Isle Of Wight, London, Australia

Heights - double decker bus, Empire State Building, Statue Of Liberty, Canary Wharf, Nelson's Column, Mount Everest, man, Great Pyramid of Giza, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Burj Dubai, BT Tower

Speeds - cheetah, Concorde, snail, two-toed sloth, tortoise, man, sound, light, F1 Car

Other sections (such as weight, time and volume) may appear in the not too distant future. For information on how I got the figures and created the calculator, as well as perceived inaccuracies and known points of contention, visit the About The DDBC page.

This is an ongoing project. If you have any comments on the calculator, including any errors and inaccuracies you might find, as well as any interesting measurements you wish me to add to the calculators, then don't hesitate to contact me.
